Translucent Vinyl

Made to be looked through rather than at. The colour you approve on the bench is not the colour the customer sees lit.

Also called	Lightbox film, backlit vinyl, 3630 series
Thickness	Typically 2 to 3 mil, applied to acrylic or polycarbonate faces.
Outdoor life	Five to eight years on a well built lit face. Failure usually shows as colour drift rather than the film letting go.
Ballpark cost	Roughly 1.80 to 3 dollars a square foot.

Ballpark trade cost per square foot as of August 2026, before laminate, labour or markup. Films are bought by the roll and the per foot price moves a lot with roll width and volume, so treat these as a sanity check rather than a quote.

What it actually is

Pigmented film formulated to transmit light evenly rather than block it, so an internally illuminated face reads as one consistent colour instead of a bright patch over the lamp.

→ Backlit menu boards and directories
→ Anything where the sign works after dark

What to watch for

Proof it LIT. Translucent colours shift substantially between ambient light and transmitted light, and a red that looks right on the bench can go orange on the wall. Every experienced shop has paid for this lesson once.

Do not use opaque vinyl on a lit face. It blocks light, the lamps show as hot spots through everything else, and the sign looks broken rather than dark.

LED retrofits change the answer. Modern LEDs are cooler and more directional than the fluorescent tubes many older cabinets were designed around, so film that looked even before can show banding after.

Applied over an aged acrylic face, the yellowing underneath shifts every colour. Replace the face or price it in, rather than discovering it at switch on.

Printing and finishing

Prints on solvent and UV. Double strike or higher ink density is common so colour holds when light is pushed through it, and second surface work needs the colours reversed.
