Vinyl & films
Translucent Vinyl
Made to be looked through rather than at. The colour you approve on the bench is not the colour the customer sees lit.
| Also called | Lightbox film, backlit vinyl, 3630 series |
| Thickness | Typically 2 to 3 mil, applied to acrylic or polycarbonate faces. |
| Outdoor life | Five to eight years on a well built lit face. Failure usually shows as colour drift rather than the film letting go. |
| Ballpark cost | Roughly 1.80 to 3 dollars a square foot. |
Ballpark trade cost per square foot as of August 2026, before laminate, labour or markup. Films are bought by the roll and the per foot price moves a lot with roll width and volume, so treat these as a sanity check rather than a quote.
What it actually is
Pigmented film formulated to transmit light evenly rather than block it, so an internally illuminated face reads as one consistent colour instead of a bright patch over the lamp.
What it is good for
- → Internally illuminated lightbox and cabinet faces
- → Channel letter faces and returns
- → Backlit menu boards and directories
- → Anything where the sign works after dark
What to watch for
Printing and finishing
Prints on solvent and UV. Double strike or higher ink density is common so colour holds when light is pushed through it, and second surface work needs the colours reversed.
Quoting a job with Translucent Vinyl?
The free sign price calculator prices by size and material the way a shop quotes, and the wrap calculator works out coverage before you order film. No signup on either.
Translucent Vinyl — FAQ
Can I use regular vinyl on a lightbox?
Not on the lit area. Opaque film blocks the light, so the graphic goes black at night and the lamps show as hot spots. Translucent film is formulated to diffuse light evenly.
Why did the colour change when the sign was lit?
Because transmitted light and reflected light are different. Translucent colours must be proofed on a light table or against the actual cabinet, not judged on the bench.
Does an LED retrofit affect the vinyl?
It can. LEDs are more directional than the fluorescent tubes older cabinets used, so a face that lit evenly before may show banding. Check spacing and diffusion when quoting a retrofit.
