Reflective Sheeting

Sends light back at the driver who sent it. Graded by how much comes back, and on public roads the grade is not your choice.

Also called	Engineer grade, high intensity prismatic, diamond grade, retroreflective
Thickness	Sold by grade rather than mil. Engineer grade for parking and property signs, high intensity prismatic and above for roads.
Outdoor life	Engineer grade is commonly warranted five to seven years. The higher prismatic grades run ten years and beyond.
Ballpark cost	Roughly 3 to 5 dollars a square foot for engineer grade, considerably more for prismatic grades.

Ballpark trade cost per square foot as of August 2026, before laminate, labour or markup. Films are bought by the roll and the per foot price moves a lot with roll width and volume, so treat these as a sanity check rather than a quote.

What it actually is

Glass bead or prismatic retroreflective film. Engineer grade is the entry Type 1 material, high intensity prismatic is considerably brighter, and diamond grade brighter again at motorway distances.

What it is good for

→ Parking, property and private road signage
→ Street and traffic signs, at the grade the authority specifies
→ Emergency and safety signage that must read at night
→ Vehicle chevron and conspicuity markings

What to watch for

For anything on a public road the grade is dictated by the authority, not by the shop. Quote engineer grade where the specification calls for high intensity and the sign gets rejected at inspection, with the reprint on you.

Reflective does not like heat stretching. Forcing it around a curve crushes the bead or prism structure and the sign simply stops reflecting in that area.

Print with inks and profiles made for reflective. Ordinary ink laid heavily kills the retroreflectivity, and a sign that looks perfect in daylight is dead in headlights.

Overlaminate must be a reflective compatible one. The wrong laminate scatters the returned light and you lose the whole point of the material.

Printing and finishing

Prints on solvent and UV with the right profile, and translucent reflective exists for internally illuminated signs that must still work when the lamp fails.
