What is return?
The return is the side wall of a channel letter or sign can — the depth dimension, typically 3 to 5 inches on letters, that turns a flat shape into a lit box.
Returns are bent from coil stock (aluminum, pre-painted or painted after) around the letter's outline. Return depth is a spec line on every channel letter quote: deeper returns diffuse LEDs better and read more substantial; shallower returns save material and suit smaller letters.
The word extends beyond letters — any fabricated sign's side face is its return, and ACM panels get 'returned edges' by routing and folding. When a customer says a flat panel looks flat, a returned edge is usually the upsell that fixes it.
