Jackson sign permit requirements

Permit required for all signs except those exempted under subsection 102-30(9) and section 102-31; exempt signs include professional name plates ≤1.5 sq ft, window signs, real estate signs, etc.

“Except for signs exempted under subsection 102-30 (9) and section 102-31 of this article, no sign shall be constructed, erected, relocated or expanded unless the owner thereof or his representative, obtains a sign permit from the building official.”

For structures within 300 ft of the street right-of-way: max 15% of each building wall; 300-400 ft: 20%; over 400 ft: 25%; total sign area for entire building not to exceed 400 sq ft

“Building sign (wall or canopy sign): For structures located within 300 feet from the street right-of-way on which it fronts, the sign area shall not exceed 15 percent of each building wall allowed.”

15% of each building wall for structures within 300 ft of ROW; 20% for 300-400 ft; 25% for over 400 ft (C-3 general commercial)

“For a structure located in excess of 400 feet and more from street right-of-way on which it fronts, the sign area shall not exceed 25 percent of each building wall allowed.”

One ground sign per street frontage, 1 sq ft per linear foot of street frontage, not to exceed 200 sq ft (C-3 general commercial)

“Ground sign: One per street frontage and the sign area shall be computed as one square foot of signage per linear foot of street frontage. The sign area shall not exceed 200 square feet.”

35 feet (C-3 general commercial); up to 40 feet for businesses oriented toward an interstate located not more than 200 ft from ROW where interstate grade rises over 20 ft above frontage road

“Maximum height: Sign shall not exceed 35 feet.”

No closer than ten feet from any property line (C-3 general commercial)

“Location: Sign shall be located no closer than ten feet from any property line.”

In CMU-1, NMU-1, UTC and UV districts: not to exceed six square feet; area included in allowable building sign area for the zoning district

“Projecting signs in CMU-1, NMU-1, UTC and UV districts are subject to the following provisions: (1) Shall not exceed six square feet in size.”

Minimum 9 feet vertical clearance; shall not project more than 5 feet from the building wall; in specified districts no closer than 3 feet from any street curb line

“All projecting signs must have a minimum of nine feet of vertical clearance and shall not project more than five feet from the building wall.”

Window signs may collectively cover 20 percent or less of total window glass surface area of the entire building including the frame (no permit required)

“and which collectively cover 20 percent or less of the total window glass surface area of the entire building including the frame.”

Signs must be shielded to prevent glare; flashing/intermittent/animated illumination prohibited except clocks/message boards; digital signs max 5,000 NITS daytime and 1,000 NITS sunset-to-sunrise with automatic dimmer

“The maximum brightness for digital electronic signs shall not exceed an illumination of 5,000 NITS (candelas per square meter) during daylight hours nor 1,000 NITS (candelas per square meter) during the period from sunset to sunrise, as measured from a sign face at maximum brightness.”

Digital electronic signs permitted when each display remains fixed, motionless, nonflashing and static for 8 seconds or more, with transition time between displays not exceeding 2 seconds; max six commercial ads plus one PSA per rotating package

“Digital electronic signs are permitted when each display of such signs remains fixed, motionless, nonflashing, and static for periods of eight seconds or more, and the transition time between each static display must not exceed two seconds.”

Temporary sign requires a permit valid for not more than 90 consecutive days nor more than 90 days in any one year; one per premise (except balloons/pennants), not to exceed 50 sq ft

“A temporary sign, as defined by this article, shall require a permit and such permit shall be valid for not more than 90 consecutive days nor more than 90 days in any one year. Except for balloons and pennants, one temporary sign shall be permitted per premise and shall not exceed 50 square feet in size.”

Prohibited: portable signs, roof signs (unless legal at adoption), flashing/intermittent/animated signs, signs with beacons, abandoned signs, signs on trees/utility poles, signs in the shape of traffic control signs, and any sign not expressly authorized

“Portable signs are prohibited. They shall not be considered temporary signs. Also, signs that are not permanently fixed on a substantial structure, or any signs composed entirely or in part with a beacon are prohibited.”
