Shreveport sign permit requirements

Permit required for permanent business signs including wall, freestanding, projecting, awning, canopy, marquee, roof and electronic message signs. Certain signs (e.g., permanent window signs, government signs, additional signs) require no permit. Routine maintenance and copy/message changes are exempt.

“Signs that require a sign permit are delineated in this Article and are required to obtain a sign permit in accordance with Article 16 .”

“The maximum size of a wall sign is established at one square foot per linear foot of building wall where the wall sign will be mounted or 40 square feet, whichever is greater.”

C-1: 48 sf monument (pole prohibited); C-2: 48 sf monument (pole prohibited); C-3 & C-4: 64 sf monument, 80 sf pole. Increased to 200 sf where development has 200 ft frontage and 2+ acres.

Monument 8 ft in C-1 through C-4; pole 40 ft in C-3 and C-4. Increased to 25 ft where development has 200 ft frontage and 2+ acres.

“Freestanding signs must be set back five feet from any lot line. No freestanding sign may project into, over, or otherwise encroach on a public right-of-way.”

“Projecting signs must maintain a minimum vertical clearance of seven feet, six inches.”

“All window signs, whether temporary or permanent, are limited to no more than 30% of the surface of each window area.”

Signs may be internally or externally illuminated; must not cast glare on roadways/properties; max 1 footcandle at lot line. Electronic message signs limited to 5,000 nits daytime and 500 nits dusk-to-dawn with automatic dimmer.

“The maximum allowable footcandle at the lot line for any illuminated sign is one footcandle.”

Electronic message signs allowed with permit for non-residential uses in commercial districts; electronic component max 70% of total sign area; one per lot; each message static minimum 4 seconds; no scrolling, flashing, animation or movement; max 5,000 nits day / 500 nits dusk-to-dawn

“Each message or image displayed on an electronic message sign must be static for a minimum of four seconds. Multi-color messages and static images are permitted.”

Banners max 32 sq ft; no more than one per building/property frontage at a time; max 30 days, not more than two times per calendar year (longer if approved by Executive Director)

“No property shall display a banner for more than 30 days, not more than two times per calendar year. Banners may be displayed longer than 30 days if approved by the Executive Director.”

Regulations vary materially by zoning district; figures reported are for general commercial districts (C-1 through C-4). Freestanding sign area/height differ across C-1 (48sf/8'), C-2 (48sf/8'), C-3 & C-4 (64sf monument / 80sf pole at 40').
