Coral Springs sign permit requirements

Permit required for all permanent signs; temporary signs, window signs, flags, and nameplate/identification signs with letters ≤3 in and area ≤3 sq ft are exempt.

“It shall be unlawful for any person to install, alter or cause to be installed or altered within the municipal limits of the city without first having obtained a permit from the city manager or their designee.”

Base sign area varies by width of right-of-way in general commercial (B/GC etc.) districts: 28 sq ft (0–79 ft ROW) up to 98 sq ft (320+ ft ROW), per the Basic design schedule; adjustments add 10% per 50 ft from ROW.

Signs may utilize no more than 70% of the vertical height and 70% of the width of the background space (or tenant space between demising partitions).

Projecting signs are effectively prohibited: signs projecting horizontally more than 18 inches from the structure, or projecting other than at right angles to the building front, are prohibited (except as specifically designed signs). Flat/wall signs may not project more than 12 inches.

Permanent window signs may not exceed 20% of total window area per business frontage or 21.5 sq ft, whichever is less. Temporary window signs limited to 15% of total window area for 14 days.

Signs may be illuminated (internal or external), but permanent signs illuminated from outside are prohibited unless the source is not visible from any abutting right-of-way or adjacent property. Exposed neon/bare bulb illumination is prohibited except as specifically permitted. Box/cabinet signs with internal illumination prohibited unless individual/translucent letters with opaque face.

In general commercial districts: 2 temporary signs per parcel plus 1 per each 200 ft of linear street frontage; first 2 up to 32 sq ft (additional up to 8 sq ft), max 6 ft height for freestanding. One temporary wall sign/banner per parcel, only for first 45 days after new business tax issued, up to 32 sq ft and 15 ft height. Signs allowed for 7 calendar days after events.

Prohibited types include: balloons, feather banners, windborne devices; animated signs; snipe signs; roof signs, parapet signs, and signs projecting above canopy/parapet/roof; billboards; vehicle signs; pylon and pole signs; changeable copy signs (except as permitted); electronic message centers; bus bench/shelter signs; abandoned signs; costumed characters/mascots; sign foam signs; human/hand-held signs.
