Chandler sign permit requirements

Permit required for signs; no permit needed for any sign 6 sq ft or less in area not otherwise prohibited or required to obtain a permit

“Unless specifically exempted herein, no sign shall be erected, installed, enlarged or maintained without first obtaining a permit from the City as herein provided.”

C-2 Community Commercial: 2 sq ft per linear foot of business frontage, 200 sq ft max. (C-1: 1 sq ft/ft; C-3: 2 sq ft/ft, 250 sq ft max)

“Wall signs shall not exceed two (2) square feet in area for each linear foot of business frontage. Said signs shall be wall- or window-mounted, on or under an architectural projection. The sign shall not project more than two (2) feet from the building or structure to which it is attached. No wall sign shall exceed two hundred (200) square feet in area.”

No wall sign may exceed 80% of the height of the sign band/wall or 80% of the length of the leased frontage or sign band/wall; letter size limited to 15% of building height

“In no case shall any wall sign exceed eighty (80) percent of the height of the sign band or wall to which the sign is attached, and no such sign shall exceed eighty (80) percent of the length of the leased frontage or eighty (80) percent of the length of the sign band or wall to which the sign is attached.”

C-2 Community Commercial single-user site: 1 sq ft of sign area per linear foot of business frontage; total combined area of all freestanding signs shall not exceed 400 sq ft per developed parcel

“One (1) freestanding sign for each single-user site not to exceed one (1) square foot of sign area for each linear foot of business frontage.”

Freestanding monument sign typically 6 ft; for shopping centers/multi-user sites max 6 ft, up to 10 ft (14 ft at corner of two major arterials) with exceptions

“Maximum sign height shall not exceed six (6) feet, except as provided below:”

No freestanding monument sign closer than 50 ft from the property line of a residential development

“In no instance, shall a freestanding monument sign be located closer than fifty (50) feet from the property line of a residential development.”

Blade (projecting) sign shall not exceed 4 sq ft in area

“The sign must be perpendicular to the building front and shall not exceed four (4) square feet in area.”

Blade signs: minimum clearance 7 ft above the sidewalk; no part shall project beyond overhang of roof or any corner of the building

“The minimum clearance of the sign shall be seven (7) feet above the sidewalk in accordance with Subsection 30-7.9(B)3.”

Window signs shall not exceed 25% of the total window area on any one side of a building; not included in total allowed sign area; no permit required

“The area of such signs shall not exceed twenty-five (25) percent of the total window area on any one side of a building as illustrated in Figure 9.14-A.”

Signs may be illuminated; digital sign brightness limited to 0.3 footcandles above ambient at night; signs facing abutting residential must be non-illuminated, halo-illuminated or low-intensity; prohibited: building-outline neon, exposed bulbs over 40 watts, neon over 30 milliamps

“The difference between the foregoing off (ambient light) and the full digital sign display measurements shall not exceed 0.3 footcandles at night.”

Digital signs (EMC) allowed with sign permit; must have automatic dimming, illumination increase limited to 0.3 footcandles at night, and manual freeze/off capability; flashing/movement prohibited except digital signs per 39-9.15

“All digital signs shall be equipped with a fully operational light sensor or other device that automatically adjusts the intensity of the sign according to ambient light conditions.”

Banners require temporary sign permit; each business/nonresidential use limited to no more than 30 cumulative days within each 6-month period in a calendar year (shared allotment with air-activated and feather signs)

“Each multiple family development, business or nonresidential use shall be allotted no more than thirty (30) cumulative days within each six (6) month period in a calendar year to display air-activated signs, banners, or feather signs.”

Fixed balloons; billboards; signs outlining a building with neon/exposed lighting; flashing/blinking/rotating/moving-light signs (except digital); signs producing odor or sound; signs with mechanical movement (except air-activated temporary); signs on fuel tanks/containers/waste receptacles; abandoned signs (90+ days); signs posing traffic hazards

“3. Fixed balloons; 4. Signs that contain or consist of exposed incandescent bulbs exceeding forty (40) watts each, or neon or similar tube type of illumination exceeding thirty (30) milliamps, except as provided for in Section 39-9.18 City Center District; 5. Signs which are abandoned for a period of ninety (90) days or greater; 6. Signs that have flashing, blinking, fluttering or rotating lights”
