Aluminum

The traffic and parking sign material. Effectively permanent, completely rigid, and unforgiving of a bad hole.

Also called	Sheet aluminium, .040, .063, blanks
Thicknesses	0.040 in for most parking, real estate and property signs. 0.063 in and 0.080 in for large panels, road signs and anything that will be hit.
Weight	About 0.57 lb per square foot at 0.040 in. Heavier than ACM at the same footprint but far stiffer.
Outdoor life	Ten years and beyond. The substrate normally outlives the business named on it.
Ballpark cost	Roughly 90 to 120 dollars a sheet in 0.040 in, and it tracks the aluminium market rather than staying still.

What it actually is

Solid aluminium sheet, usually mill finished or with a baked enamel coating on one or both faces. Rust is simply not a failure mode.

What it is good for

→ Parking, property and regulatory signs
→ Real estate post panels that get reused
→ Anywhere the sign must survive impact or vandalism
→ Reflective traffic signage over engineer grade sheeting

What to watch for

It heat bows on some UV flatbeds. The sheet expands under the lamps, comes off the table with a curve, and does not fully relax. Print cooler and in more passes rather than fighting it afterwards.

Every hole has to be right the first time. There is no filling a misplaced hole in a finished aluminium panel.

Bare edges are sharp enough to cut an installer. Deburr as a habit, not when someone complains.

Mill finish is not a printing surface. It wants proper preparation or a coated blank, or the graphics will lift at the edges within a year.

Printing and finishing

Coated blanks print and take vinyl reliably. Reflective sheeting is its own discipline with its own vinyl and its own overlaminate rules.

Is .040 or .063 aluminum better for signs?

0.040 in handles most parking and property signs up to about 24 x 30. Move to 0.063 in when the panel is larger, spans between two posts, or is somewhere it will get knocked.

Why does aluminum curl on a flatbed printer?

Heat from the UV lamps expands the printed face faster than the back. Slowing down, splitting the ink into more passes and letting the sheet cool between them all help.

Aluminum or ACM for a storefront sign?

ACM, almost always. It is lighter, cheaper, stays flatter across a wide panel and can be routed and folded. Solid aluminium earns its place where impact resistance matters.
