What is safe area?
Also called: Safe zone, margin
The safe area is the margin inside the trim line where all text and critical elements must stay, so cutting tolerance and finishing can never clip them.
It's the bleed rule pointing inward: the same variance that could leave a white edge could also shave a letter that hugs the trim. A quarter inch inside the line is a working minimum on signs; banners with hems and grommets want text well clear of the hem fold — usually two inches or more.
Customers put phone numbers in corners; grommets go in corners. That collision is the single most common banner layout fix a shop makes, and catching it at proof beats explaining a hole through the area code.
