What is pylon sign?

Also called: Pole sign, highway sign

A pylon sign is a tall freestanding sign elevated on one or more poles — the high-visibility structure that announces plazas and dealerships to traffic.

Height is the product: pylons exist to be seen past buildings and down highways, commonly 20 to 80 feet, usually with internally lit cabinets or EMCs on a steel structure with engineered foundations. Everything about them is permit- and engineering-heavy.

Most sign shops sell and service pylons but subcontract the steel and crane work. The recurring revenue is face swaps and retrofits — a plaza's pylon changes tenants far more often than it changes structure.
