What is weeding?
Weeding is removing the unwanted vinyl from around and inside a cut design — everything that isn't the graphic — before the lettering or logo is transferred to the sign.
After a plotter cuts lettering, the sheet is still one piece: the letters you want and the background you don't, plus the little islands inside letters like O, A and R (the counters). Weeding is picking all of that away with a hook or tweezers so only the design remains on the backing liner, ready for transfer tape.
It's also where small-text jobs go to die. Type below about half an inch in a soft vinyl weeds slowly and tears easily, which is why shops quote fine-detail cut vinyl higher than the material cost suggests — you're pricing the weeding time, not the film.
