What is second surface?
Second-surface printing puts the image, reversed, on the back of a clear substrate so it's viewed through the material — protecting the ink and giving the glassy depth lobby signs are known for.
First surface is ink on the front; second surface is ink behind, seen through acrylic or glass. The print is mirrored in prepress, and often backed with white ink or opaque vinyl so it reads against the wall behind it.
Two production notes: the file must be flipped (an unmirrored second-surface job reads backwards through the face — an unforgettable mistake to make once), and print order matters when white backing is involved — colour first, then white, or the layers sandwich wrong.
